“I’m the Ernest Hemingway of 140 characters” – Donald Trump

Donald Trump’s social media campaign during his quest to become the 45th President of the United States has been my *favourite* social media campaign over the past 12 months.

This man and his team know how to use social media to their advantage. Trump went from being known as a wealthy reality star, to becoming the President of the United States.  This didn’t happen by accident.

To prove my point, I’m going to answer three questions:

  1. Why I loved his strategy,
  2. What made it so clever,
  3. What it has achieved.

People love knowing that there is a real human being behind a professional social media account.  There’s a sense of comfort knowing you are receiving somebody’s real thoughts and feelings. People want real moments from everyday life.  People desire the unpredictable, but familiar at the same time.  On Twitter, Donald Trump is KING at this.  He shares his thoughts and feelings with the world with no regard for time of day, political correctness or the amount of exclamation points in his Tweets. Examples below:

He shares the wealth on his social media platforms

Different social media platforms are more popular with different demographics across the United States. Trump’s team do not only understand this, they used it to their advantage. Publishing his content on a variety of platforms increases engagement with a larger audience and assists with brand consistency.

For starters, Trump made his formal announcement for president on the new live streaming app, Periscope.  This strategy created an even larger amount of buzz and media attention around his candidacy.

Here are a few of Trump’s popular, yet controversial posts:

Research Research Research

Trump’s team listened to thousands of hours of conservative talk radio. They were in tune with what conservatives were most worried about.  Those reports revealed the GOP base were concerned over issues such as immigration, Obamacare and Common Core.

Donald Trump used this information to run his presidential campaign. He capitalised on conservative nightmares, fears and hopes for the country and magnified the consequences if the issues are not addressed. Example:

Triple Whammy: ISIS, immigration and Mexico all under 140 characters.

The 45th President of the United States

Donald Trump’s social media strategy helped him beat out eleven Republican candidates and the Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton.  Trump is unqualified and completely unprepared for what the Presidency will hold, but because of his expert social strategy he is now the 45th President of the United States of America.

Sidenote: Let’s be very clear. I am absolutely NOT a Trump fanBut you have to give credit where it’s due.
